Sixth form to welcome students from doomed UTC

Burnley's Thomas Whitham Sixth Form has announced it is taking on 16 Year 12 students from the University Technical College.

It follows on from news that 34 final year students at the blighted £10m. Trafalgar Street college would now be able to finish their studies there.

Brendan Conboy, headteacher of Thomas Whitham Sixth Form, said: “On behalf of the whole community, we are delighted to welcome 16 Year 12 students from the UTC Burnley who will be joining our college from Monday 13 June 2016.

“It has obviously been a very unsettling time for these students and their families, and we thank them for working so closely with us to ensure a smooth transition to Thomas Whitham Sixth Form. We know that they will be really happy in their new setting and we wish them every success on their engineering pathway here at the Sixth Form.”

Last week it was announced that MP Julie Cooper, with support from Burnley College, Blessed Trinity RC College Burnley Council and the county council, had secured funding from the Department of Education which will allow students to study there for the next educational year.

It means students will be able to continue as a group in one venue rather than being sent to a number of schools across the area.
