Elderly residents in parts of Cliviger say they are struggling to get around in the run-up to Christmas due to gas works.

Buses serving Higher Red Lees, including Richmond Avenue, Hall Park, Dyneley Avenue and Hillcrest Avenue, are being diverted around the area while the work is carried out by National Grid.

National Grid has arranged for a shuttle bus to get people into town but residents said this has not been well publicised and many residents are unaware of it.

Mrs Cynthia Taylor (76), of Richmond Avenue, catches the Burnley to Halifax and Burnley to Rochdale buses.

She said she has travelled on the shuttle bus to Pike Hill before catching another bus into Burnley town centre but said she knows people who have not been informed about it. When I found out this was going to happen I went out to do my Christmas shopping.

“The neighbours are being very good with their cars but this has taken our independence off us for a time.

“I go out four times a week on the bus. The shuttle bus is better than nothing but I think more people need to be made aware of it.”

A National Grid spokeswoman said the work is expected to last another week.
