Kind-hearted pupils from a Burnley school who watched as the North West Air Ambulance landed on their field to treat a casualty have raised £500 for the charity.

The cash was presented to North West Air Ambulance volunteer Freda Whittle at an assembly at Holy Trinity Primary School, Raglan Road.

Headteacher Mrs Catherine Braithwaite said the school was contacted by air ambulance volunteers two weeks ago asking for permission to land on the field.

“We had informed parents there was nothing to worry about in school,” she said. “The air ambulance was able to land and the ordinary ambulance brought the casualty to the field. We got all the children outside to watch them take off again.”

Pupils were then given the task of being news reporters and were asked to write their version of events.

Mrs Braithwaite added: “The children realise it was a serious incident and somebody was seriously hurt but really enjoyed seeing the helicopter in such close quarters.”
