POLICE are appealing for witnesses following a serious road traffic collision in Nelson.

The incident happened at around 12:00pm on Leeds Road close to the junction with Beech Street. A Honda Civic collided with an elderly woman knocking her down.

The 74 year old woman was air lifted to the Royal Preston Hospital and is in a serious but stable condition, it is not thought her injuries are life threatening.

Sergeant Finn Quainton from the Road Policing Unit said, “I would appeal to anyone who was in the area at the time and who witnessed the collision to come forward and contact us.

“The family of the lady involved are being informed and specially trained family liaison officers will be supporting and working with them.”

A 19 year old man has been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and has been released on police bail pending further enquiries until the 14th of November.

Anyone with any information is asked to call the Road Policing Unit on 101.

People with information can also contact the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 or on-line at Crimestoppers-uk.org. No personal details are taken, information is not traced or recorded and you will not go to court.
