TWO walkers were washed away yesterday as they tried to cross a swollen river in the heart of Bowland.

The pair were washed downstream in Langden Valley before managing to clamber to safety on the river bank and make it to the nearest house, about an hour’s walk away.

Police called in Bowland Mountain Rescue Team at 7-30 p.m. yesterday to help rescue a further four walkers in the same group who were stranded at the other side of the river, which had been swollen by heavy rain.

The rescue team reported that the six adult walkers were well equipped and the stranded group were helped across the river using specialist rope techniques, and swiftwater rescue equipment. The group were treated for hypothermia at the scene.
