Hero Padiham fire crew receive lifesaving honour

A HERO fire crew has been honoured for saving a Padiham mum’s life in a house blaze last year.

Firefighters from Padiham Fire Station were given a commendation for bravery in rescuing the woman from her Windermere Road home last July.

Margaret Jackson (50) was found slumped unconscious in an upstairs bedroom after an electrical fault in a TV sparked a fire in the property.

Four brave firefighters had entered the smoke-filled house and managed to drag the mother-of-one out seconds before she stopped breathing.

She was given emergency first aid treatment outside before paramedics took over and she was rushed to hospital in a critical condition.

Mrs Jackson made a full recovery and now the live-saving actions of the Padiham fire crew have been recognised.

Crew manager Darren Bowers, of Padiham Fire Station, said: “She had a very lucky escape at the time. It was only a matter of minutes between her surviving and not surviving.

“The prompt actions of the crew in locating her as quickly as they did obviously made her chances of survival a lot better.

“It is not the first time we have saved lives. It is something we put ourselves up for day in, day out. The crew in Padiham do an excellent job for the community. It is good to be recognised for what we do.”

Watch manager Duncan Barker-Brown received the commendation from East Lancashire group manager Jerry Cragg along with crew managers Darren Bowers and Anthony Thompson, and firefighters Lee Butterworth, Dave Byrom, Rick Courtney, Craig Farnol, Phil Gardner, Joe Horne, and Dan McNeil.
