Burnley magistrates were told how Adnan Hussain (29) had drawn the attention of the police at 3-30am after he drove past them at speed. When officers tried to stop him, he was said to have gone through a red light at a junction before the crash.

Police had to drag Hussain, who had just lost his job, from the Vauxhall Astra, which was his girlfriend’s, and noticed his breath smelled of alcohol. He gave a positive roadside breath test and at the police station the lower of two samples was 73 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35.

The hearing was told the defendant made no comment when interviewed. He then denied the allegations. He had previous convictions for driving without due care and attention and no insurance.

Agency worker Hussain, of Brier Crescent, Nelson, admitted driving with excess alcohol in Colne Road, Burnley, and no insurance, on January 23. He was fined £230, with £85 costs and a £20 victim surcharge and banned for 20 months.

John Rusius (defending) said didn’t normally drink. Hussain did not accept he went through a red light or that he was speeding. He did accept he was over the limit.

The solicitor told the hearing: “All he can do is apologise.”
