An 11-year-old boy who died after falling into the canal in Burnley last night has been named.

Robbie Williamson, a Year 7 pupil at Shuttleworth College in Padiham, died after falling into the Leeds and Liverpool Canal shortly before 7pm.

Shocked teachers and pupils have paid tribute to him.

Headteacher Mr Bob Wakefield said: “Obviously we are absolutely heartbroken and devastated at this terrible loss. Clearly at the moment our thoughts are with his family and friends.

“Robbie was a lovely lad, lots of fun. He always had a smile on his face and if you met the lad you would think he was bursting with life and energy. It’s an absolute tragedy that we’ve lost him.”
