Whittlefield Primary School pupil Scott Lewis Hughes handed over the £4 he had been left by the Tooth Fairy after he lost the second of his front teeth recently.

And the big-hearted seven-year-old decided straight away to hand over the cash to help the young people and families supported by Derian House Children’s Hospice, Chorley, whose work he had found out about during his sessions at the FUNDA play scheme based at Burnley College this summer.

“Many thanks to Scott for being so thoughtful and thinking of us here at Derian,” said community fund-raiser Jo Moss.

“Every donation helps us to reach our annual target of £3.75m. to help support more than 300 families who have a child with a life-threatening illness and a further 200 who are receiving bereavement support.”

Kieran Fletcher, founder of the FUNDA, a Burnley firm which encourages children to become active through holiday camps, workshops and teacher training, said: “It’s good to work with Derian House where we can and let the young people know about the work that goes on there. We’ve held activities with the children, been into primary schools and even dressed up.”

Scott’s mum, Kelly Hughes, added: “Scott loved his time at FUNDA and I couldn’t believe it when he came home and said what he’d done for Derian House. It was so thoughtful.”

Derian House Children’s Hospice was opened in 1993 and cares for children with life-threatening and life-shortening conditions, as well as providing support for families.
