Burnley '˜no plans' to empty bins only once a month

Reports earlier this week suggested as a result of Lancashire County Council ceasing a cost-sharing arrangement for the collection and disposal of waste, Burnley Council, facing an £800,00 a year deficit from 2018/19, would move from weekly collections alternating general refuse and recycling to a four-weekly cycle for each.

However, Burnley Council, in replying to the study carried out by consultants for the county, has stated that the level of savings is much less than the £800,000 required and so would not be an appropriate move.

Coun. Lian Pate, Executive member for community services, said: “The report only looks at the financial cost of a change in bin collection frequencies. However, the Burnley Council Executive needs to consider the impact on our residents and clearly this would not be a service that our residents would want.”

Council leader Coun. Mark Townsend said: “We have always raised our concerns with Lancashire County Council about ceasing the cost-sharing agreement

“We hope that some form of financial assistance will still come from LCC , to help it minimise its disposal costs, but irrespective of this, I also want to reassure residents that we are not moving to the four-weekly bin emptying cycle.”
