But she told guests at a thank you dinner hosted by Mayoress Mrs Brenda Lambert that it is a challenge she probably won’t be repeating, even though it raised £1,220 for her appeal for the Macmillan Nurses and the Neo-natal Baby Unit at Burnley General Hospital.

The dinner was held at Burnley Mechanics to thank members whose hard work over the year raised £11,860 for the two causes. They worked tirelessly holding a host of events as varied as raffles, sales, tombolas, coffee mornings, lunches, to an origami event, the Mayor’s skydive, a beetle drive, a race night, a pie morning, talks and events at members’ homes and even the sale of eggs.

It was Mrs Lambert’s second term as Mayoress, the first being when her late husband, Coun. Tony Lambert, was Mayor. During the year she also accompanied the Mayor and her consort, Mr Richard Monk, to various events as well as leading her fund-raising team. She was thanked for a successful year by committee secretary Coun. Ida Carmichael who presented albums recording the year to the Mayor and Mayoress.

The Mayoress thanked all her team for their support and the Mayor said they were an inspirational group of people who had gone above and beyond to raise the splendid amount for her charities. She wished next year’s Mayoress, Lesley Sumner, a fantastic year. All the committee members received gifts of jewellery from the Mayoral team, while the only man on the committee, Welsh-born David Thomas, was delighted to receive a signed picture of the Swansea FC team. Flowers were presented to the secretary Ida and treasurer Diane Ireland by the Mayoress and committee members. There were also gifts for the Mayor’s two officers, David Farrar and David Bristow, for their help during the year.

Member Lorna Tatchell proposed a 90th birthday toast to the Queen as the event fell on her birthday.
