An inquest into the death of a Burnley schoolboy who died after falling from a canal bridge has been opened this morning.

Robbie Mark Williamson (11), of Bear Street, died on Tuesday, April 22nd.

The inquest heard Robbie had been trying to cross the Leeds and Liverpool Canal across a pipe bridge with two friends when he fell three metres onto the edging stone below and slipped into the water.

His friends alerted a passer-by who pulled the youngster from the water and performed CPR until the emergency services arrived.

A post-mortem examination was performed by Home Office pathologist Dr Philip Lumb and East Lancashire Coroner Mr Richard Taylor adjourned the inquest to allow time for toxicological and histological tests to be carried out.
