Bowling competition in memory of much loved villager raises record amount

A record £1,030 was raised in Sabden in memory of a much loved villager.

Sabden Bowling Club held a two-day doubles competition to remember club member Peter Wright who died last November aged 67 - and it raised a club record for a single event. Peter’s family asked for the money to go to Marie Curie Nurses who helped him in the final days of his life.

He had been a founder member of the club and was a real character, known by everyone. So it was fitting that the sun shone throughout the event and there was a full house of players and spectators for the Peter Wright Memorial Doubles Competition arranged by the club. Peter’s brothers John and Bob presented the trophy provided by the family to the winners, Steve Anderton and Michael Opie. His sisters Eileen Mitchell and Margaret Parsons made the grand draw where the first prize was a stunning piece of artwork entitled “Sleep in Peace” painted by Peter’s niece Jill Wright especially for the competition. It was won by villagers Andi and Eric Tomlinson. The family also donated a new notice board for the club pavilion. Club president Betty Clarkson said Peter was a “very special person” and it was good to see so many people there in his memory.
