A WOMAN was bitten and hit round the head in an unprovoked assault in Burnley town centre.

The 43-year-old victim was minding her own business with friends in Hammerton Street at 3-45am on Saturday when she was hit round the back of her head and had her leggings pulled up by an unknown man.

The woman remonstrated with her offender and grabbed his genitalia before he bit her twice on the back and ran off.

Sgt Jim Astin, of Burnley Police, said: “The woman was unhurt but shaken by the ordeal. This was a nasty assault but we don’t think there was a sexual element to it.

“There are a number of bars in the area and we would like to speak to any witnesses who may have been in Hammerton Street at the time.”

Anyone with information can contact Burnley police on 425001 or Crimestoppers, in confidence, on 0800 555 111.
