VOTE NOW: Should our police be armed?
PCs Fiona Bone and Nicola Hughes
TODAY we’re asking “should our police be armed?” following the shocking incident in Greater Manchester when two female officers were killed while attending a “routine incident”.
One of the country’s most wanted men has handed himself in to police after the unarmed officers - PCs Fiona Bone and Nicola Hughes - were caught in a hail of bullets and a grenade attack in Hattersley, shortly before 11am. One officer died at the scene and the second was critically injured and died later.
Later, Dale Cregan (29), who police were seeking in connection with separate gun and grenade attacks that killed a father and son, walked into a nearby police station.
Assistant Chief Constable Garry Shewan of Greater Manchester Police said: “A long and dark shadow has been cast across Greater Manchester and my thoughts are with the officers’ family, friends and colleagues.”
Prime Minister David Cameron said the killings were “a shocking reminder of the debt we owe to those who put themselves in danger to keep us safe and secure.”
