Violent row after aunt accuses Burnley man of treating her niece ‘like a servant’
A DAD who attacked and injured a relative who claimed he treated his wife as a servant, has been spared jail.
Burnley Crown Court heard how Yaqoob Khan (36) hit Zareena Begum with his shoe and then the pair were said to have had a struggle with the defendant’s crutches.
The 55-year-old victim, who is Khan’s wife’s auntie, was said to have been worried about her only niece when she turned up unannounced at the Khan family home in Burnley. The defendant lost his temper as he felt Mrs Begum was interfering.
Khan, who left his victim crying and with blood dripping down her face after the trouble on March 19th, admitted assault causing actual bodily harm. The defendant, of Ada Street, was given an 18-month conditional discharge and must pay £200 compensation.
Stephen Parker (prosecuting) said the victim, who lived in London, said Khan treated his wife “like a servant, like they used to do 100 years ago”.
She was going to bed about 12-30am when the defendant started swearing at her. A row took place and the victim was pushed, lost her balance and landed on the sofa. Khan then took off his shoe and hit her. Mrs Begum picked up one of Khan’s crutches, the defendant got the other and there was a struggle as Khan’s wife tried to separate them. Mr Parker said police had been called and an officer arrived to find the victim sitting on the sofa, with a cut on her forehead. The defendant was arrested and spoken to. He had no previous convictions.
Joe Boyd (defending) claimed Mrs Begum was “somewhat interfering”. Khan, who had a two-year-old child and was on benefits, lost his temper.
The barrister said Khan and his wife were still living together in a loving and happy relationship. He added: “The unwelcome aunt has not been invited back.”
Sentencing, Recorder Guy Mathieson told the defendant his behaviour had been unacceptable. He said: “Whatever issues there are in your family, what you can’t do is resolve them with violence.
The judge added: “This is a chance for you to show it was just a moment’s temper and that’s not who you really are.”
