VIDEO: Sporty Brunshaw is ‘school of the year’
STAFF and pupils from a Burnley school are celebrating after it was crowned School of the Year at the Lancashire Sports Awards.
Brunshaw Primary School, in Morse Street, beat off competition from nine schools to take the accolade at an awards ceremony at Preston Guild Hall. Earlier this year, the school won the same award at Burnley Community Sports Awards, prompting them to be nominated for the county-wide prize.
The award was collected by Mr Neil Tranmer, who retired as headteacher at the end of the last academic year, new headteacher Mrs Emma McNicoll and school PE co-ordinator Mr Kevin Kay.
Mr Kay said: “Our local sports partnership nominated us for the award. We are extremely delighted but extremely shocked as well because it was so unexpected.
“We do quite a lot of sports and after-school clubs and every year our cheerleaders go to the national championships where they have been runners-up the last three times.
“The school is in quite a deprived area and the clubs are always full. I’d like to thank the parents, staff and children, without them we couldn’t have any after-school clubs.”
