A BURNLEY headteacher who won an Inspirational Teaching Award was cheered by 470 pupils and staff at a playground street party to mark his retirement.
Mr Neil Tranmer (59), whose teaching career started 38 years ago, has been at the helm at Brunshaw Primary School in Morse Street for the last 16 years.
He spent four years at the school before taking on the role of headteacher and, prior to that, was head at St James’s Primary School, in Clitheroe, and St Thomas’s in Barrowford.
Last month Mr Tranmer was honoured at the inaugural East Lancashire Newspapers Education Awards.
The grandad-of-three, who lives in Barrowford, now plans to spend more time with his wife Brenda, who recently retired from her job teaching A-level students at Sir Thomas Whitham Sixth Form in Burnley, son, two daughters, and looking after his three granddaughters.
“I’m planning nothing,” he said.
“I will just see what happens. My first priority is spending a bit more time with the family, we look after our granddaughters for part of the week. We have three and another grandchild on the way.
“The idea is that we will spend the part of the week we are not looking after them exploring the UK. We’ve always tended to go away abroad.
“And I’ve got the proverbial new shed where I can hibernate.”
Mr Tranmer was presented with restaurant vouchers by parents and a three-day break to the Lake District by pupils and staff along with a mountain of cards and other gifts.
“The last 16 years have definitely been very very special. That’s down to the very supportive parents, wonderful children and quality staff. I will miss it terribly, I’ll miss the children and the adult population here.
“I want to thank them for making this particular job an absolute joy.”
The school’s deputy headteacher Mrs Emma McNicoll will take over as headteacher from September.
