Snow and ice cause traffic chaos across Burnley

editorial image

SNOW and ice caused major traffic chaos on the roads across Burnley over the weekend.

Hundreds of motorists were affected when heavy snowfall swept through the borough on Saturday.

Despite the Met Office issuing a Yellow Warning for snow earlier in the day, drivers were caught out by the wintry conditions which left many roads impassable.

Around 6in. of snow fell in places and police were forced to shut off several routes through the town causing gridlock on the roads.

Transdev suspended bus services for several hours as blizzards caused perilous driving conditions.

Traffic came to a standstill throughout the town centre following Burnley’s Championship fixture with Peterborough and motorists abandoned cars by the roadside.

Reports from drivers on Twitter said journeys of even just a few miles had taken more than two hours.

Gritters and snow ploughs were out in force on Saturday night and Lancashire County Council managed to clear the main routes into town.
