Shuttleworth assistant headteacher retires
RETIRING: Alan Riley from Shuttleworth College (s)
An assistant headteacher has taken early retirement after 33 years of unbroken service in two Burnley high schools.
Alan Riley (56), assistant headteacher at Shuttleworth College, and former history and games teacher at Towneley High School, has decided it is time to step down. He will, however, continue his link with Shuttleworth College and will teach some GCSE groups there.
The former St Theodore’s High School student and graduate of York University also hopes to continue his work developing oral history projects for schools, with ex-Towneley student Dr Amanda Thornton.
Mr Riley, who was made curriculum leader at Shuttleworth College in 2006, said: “I have enjoyed the vast majority of my time as a teacher in Burnley and have certainly met some interesting characters. At the time it was a big wrench to leave Towneley but it was a blessing in disguise. The last few years at Shuttleworth has seen the college go from strength to strength and education in Burnley is on the up. Hopefully, I have played a small part and am confident further progress will be made.”
The keen sportsman, who in 2000 received an award from Sky History Channel for his work following a trip to Auschwitz, will also travel Europe, and in the autumn will begin building a new house in Blacko.
