MISSED: Jeff Pickup and wife Carole

A RETIRED policeman from Burnley has died at his home in Spain.

Mr Jeff Pickup died aged 70 in the town of Senija, near Benidorm, where he had lived with his wife Carole for the last four years.

Burnley born and bred, Mr Pickup worked around East Lancashire and Greater Manchester in his long career in the police force ending as a Det. Sgt at Burnley CID.

He joined the police as a cadet aged 18 and became a popular figure with colleagues, and was also a qualified swimming coach.

He met Carole while working on police motorbikes in Greater Manchester.

They had children Alison and Ian, grandchildren Jack, Dean and Harry, and other relatives. Daughter Mrs Alison Overson said: “Dad was the life and soul of the party. He was very popular with his colleagues and was very funny.

“He retired in the late 1980s and him and mum kept a holiday home in Spain for a number of years before deciding to settle out there permanently.

“Dad’s brother Peter is out there as is my brother Ian. Mum has decided to stay out there. Dad will be missed by a lot of people.”

Alison, who is married to the former Burnley footballer Vince Overson, added that her dad was a big Clarets fan.

His funeral was held in the Spanish town of Benissa on January 5th, the Spanish Christmas Eve.
