Queen honours Burnley volunteers

A GROUP of volunteers singled out by the Queen for their selfless dedication have been treated to a civic reception.

The Burnley branch of the Catholic Fellowship for the Handicapped was given the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service earlier this year, but not everyone could attend the ceremony at County Hall in Preston when Lord Shuttleworth, the  Lord Lieutenant of Lancashire, presented the awards on her behalf.

The awards were inaugurated by the Queen to mark Her Diamond Jubilee and to recognise “unsung heroes” of the voluntary world like members of the Burnley group who are noted for their work with the disabled.

The Mayor of Burnley, Coun. Charles Bullas, invited them to the town hall to mark their award. “Not all those involved in the branch could make it to the ceremony at County Hall so I thought it would be nice to hold a reception for everyone at the town hall,” he said.

“It’s wonderful that the hard work and dedication of these volunteers have been recognised by the Queen and it’s a great honour for them, and for Burnley as a whole. I was only too pleased to be able to mark their achievement by holding a reception for them.”
