Police warning over bogus Burnley charity collectors

A BOGUS charity collector has been targeting residents in Burnley.

A man claiming to be collecting for charity has been calling at homes in a series of incidents over the last two months.

Police say a resident was targeted last Tuesday at 7-50pm by a man claiming to be raising money for his brother with cerebral palsy.

The resident refused to hand over any money and the man left empty handed.

A 17-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of fraud and has been released on police bail pending further inquiries.

Police are now urging people to be on their guard against potential bogus charity callers.

Residents are being advised to make sure the collectors have the correct paperwork, which includes accredited details of the charity.

Anyone who is unsure about a person at their door should contact police.

DI Jes Holland said: “Whilst the majority of collectors are legitimate, we want to remind people to check the authenticity of anyone claiming to be working on behalf of a charity.

“If in doubt, people should politely decline and contact the police.”

Anyone with information or concerns should contact police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
