Police issue warning over doorstep traders

POLICE in Rossendale are urging people to be vigilant after residents were targeted by suspicious salesmen.

On Thursday 27 September, a 95-year-old lady from Prince Street, Bacup, was visited by two men who asked if she would like to buy some fish. They went into her house and she gave them £40 for a small amount of kippers and cod before they left in a white van.

It is believed the same two men approached people in the Burnley Road area on Thursday 4 October asking if they wanted to buy fish. They also asked people if they knew of any greyhounds or whippets for sale in the area.

Police are investigating the reports and are appealing to anyone who sees the men or who has any further information to come forward.

Inspector Jes Holland said: “We are keen to speak to these men as we are concerned they may have ulterior motives. It appears they have significantly overcharged an elderly resident for a small amount of fish.

“Most people who call at your door are genuine although I would always advise people to remain vigilant and be on guard for bogus callers.

“Callers may pretend to be officials from organisations such as the council or your utility company when in fact they want to trick, steal or overcharge you for goods or work they may carry out.

“If the caller doesn’t have an appointment with you, do not feel obliged to answer the door. Ask for identification and if they don’t have it, they shouldn’t be coming into your house. If you are concerned, contact the police.”

Anyone with concerns or who has any information can contact police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
