A PADIHAM mum said she has been left heartbroken after “mindless scum” vandalised and stole from the grave of her baby son who she buried just three weeks ago.

Grieving Amy Waterworth (25), of St Leonard’s Street, was distraught to discover an ornament left as a tribute to eight-week-old Tommy and a sun-shaped solar light were stolen. A second solar light, in the shape of a butterfly, was smashed up.

Tommy, a brother for three-year-old Lola, was born weighing 6lb. 11oz. in Burnley General Hospital to the delight of Amy and her partner.

But their joy turned to tragedy when Tommy died suddenly four weeks ago. Amy said he had been suffering from a cold but was otherwise a healthy baby. A post-mortem failed to reveal how he died and East Lancashire Coroner Mr Richard Taylor has opened an inquest into Tommy’s death.

The vandalism was discovered when a family member went to visit the grave, in St John’s Churchyard, St John’s Road, on Saturday night.

Amy, a former pupil of St Leonard’s Primary School in Padiham and the former Ivy Bank High School, Burnley, said: “We still don’t know how Tommy died. He’d had a bit of a cold but that was it.

“It’s heartbreaking. Who would stoop so low? It’s obvious that it’s a child’s grave.

“The last few weeks have been so upsetting. The people who have done this are scum. Words can’t describe how I feel.

“I’ve been a wreck. It’s disgusting.”

The couple have reported the incident to police who are investigating.

Amy’s mum Jeanette Denson said: “Tommy is buried with my mum and we haven’t had any trouble with the grave in 15 years.

“I think it’s absolutely disgusting. The last few weeks have been awful.”
