A TROUBLED Padiham pub branded the “highest anti-social behaviour hotspot in Pennine Division” by police has been put up for sale.

The New Black Bull, which was the scene of 27 incidents last year including a 50-man street brawl, has been put on the market for £125,000.

The Mill Street hostelry, which was the scene of a fracas which left Padiham grandad Ivan Sharples with a fractured skull last September, has remained closed for several months.

Question marks hung over the future of the pub after the landlord was brought before a Burnley Council licensing hearing in December and told bouncers would have to police the doors on weekends and Bank Holidays to stamp out trouble with drinkers.

But now the pub has been put up for sale with specialist chartered surveyors for the six-figure sum.

A website advert calls the freehold hostelry a “characterful town centre premises” suitable for a variety of commercial and residential uses.Sgt Michelle Dixon, licensing officer in the borough, said the council’s licensing committee’s decision to change the pub’s conditions to require doorstaff still stands.

But Sgt Dixon said it was a “clean slate” and the pub could operate for business as usual provided doorstaff were employed on weekends and Bank Holidays.

She said that if a buyer did come forward the conditions attached to the premises would remain, adding: “As soon as someone showed an interest I would meet up with them to advise them on the problems experienced previously because we don’t want a reoccurrence of that.”

Padiham Mayor Coun. Alan Ravenscroft welcomed moves that would see the locally-listed building back into use.

He said: “It has been empty for a while now.

“You never want to see any business in Padiham closed and anything would be better than the way it looks now.

“There is nothing worse than boarded up buildings.

“It is a nice part of town there and it is a focal point for visitors coming into Padiham so it would be nice to see something happening with it. “I hope a buyer is found and puts it to good use.”
