Mechanics ‘turn the screw’ on Burnley car criminals
MECHANICS have joined forces with Burnley police in the fight against car crime.
Two car garages in the town have agreed to fit free tamper proof screws free to protect drivers’ registration plates from thieves.
The crime-cutting scheme will see motorists get the safety devices fitted at Apex Garage and D&D Motors free of charge during an MOT service, or repair.
The move comes after police figures revealed criminals targeted at least one car every single day in the town to steal registration plates.
The special screws make it more difficult for thieves to steal registration numbers, which thieves then use to commit crime such as drive-offs from petrol stations.
PCSO Karen Lonsdale, of Burnley Police, said: “Overall car crime levels are low across Burnley but recently we’ve had an increase in number plate thefts.
“We’ve been fitting the screws to hundreds of cars ourselves at various events over the past 12 months but getting this many local garages to support us is a fantastic step forward.
“It means that many more motorists can benefit from the tamper proof screws which greatly reduces the risk of thieves being able to easily obtain number plates to use for offences like petrol station drive-offs.
“We hope to roll this initiative out across the borough and will be speaking to garages to encourage them to sign up to the scheme.”
Any garages wishing to join the initiative can contact either PCSO Lonsdale or PCSO Dave Johnson on 101.
