Lout jailed and told ‘grow up’

IMMATURE lout Tommy Foley was jailed for 16 months for an unprovoked attack that left a student bleeding profusely from a head wound.
Foley (19) of Kay Street, Brierfield, admitted wounding, possessing an offensive weapon and common assault. Burnley Crown Court was told he hurled a fence post with nails in the end at Samuel Swainton (18), as he was walking home with his friend Daniel Walsh (19), who was also punched in the face.
The court was told Foley had been drinking and looking for trouble. While walking towards the Keirby Hotel he had become abusive, suggesting to a young woman she would not be safe walking with the teenagers as they were paedophiles and might try and rape her. She had asked them if she could walk with them because she felt uncomfortable about two men who were walking behind.
Miss Sarah Statham (prosecuting) said Foley and another man were seen on CCTV approaching the area of the assaults and police officers identified him from still photographs. He was arrested a month later and made no comment when questioned. The hearing was told he had 20 offences on his record.
Jailing him, Judge Jonathan Gibson also resentenced Foley for a supervision order he had flouted. It had been imposed for battery and breaching an anti-social behaviour order the judge then revoked.
Judge Gibson said: “I accept that this wasn’t planned violence and there was some remorse, but clearly what you did was reckless and potentially very dangerous.” He added: “You clearly need to become more mature.”
