Lorry smashes through Burnley shop front

Waiting for Video...

A LORRY ploughed into the front of a Burnley shop causing a gas leak alert last night.

The heavy goods vehicle had collided with a van in Colne Road before smashing through the shop front at 8-45pm.

A gas pipe in the empty Mobile World shop was severed and firefighters were forced to order an evacuation of homes nearby.

People were escorted out as fire crews and engineers worked to isolate the gas supply and a police cordon was set up around the building.

The driver of the Transit van suffered cuts and lacerations in the collision but was not taken to hospital.

The gas supply to the building was made safe and the shop was boarded up. Building inspectors are expected to visit the site to look at the structure of the shop.
