Health chiefs assure BMA strike will cause minimal disruption in Burnley

PATIENTS are being advised to attend scheduled appointments at Burnley General Hospital, despite a national doctors’ strike tomorrow.

On Thursday 21st June, doctors who are part of the British Medical Association (BMA) will hold a day of action, to raise their concerns over the NHS pension scheme.

However, East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust has confirmed that Burnley’s Emergency Department and Urgent Care Centre, will be running as normal, and those with diagnostic or outpatient appointments will be informed if the industrial action is set to affect them.

GPs are not obliged to state whether or not they are taking part in the strike, but all surgeries will be open.

If clinical support is not available, staff will advise where patients should go.

A spokesman for East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust said: “Doctors who participate in industrial action have pledged to continue duties that are necessary for the safe continuance of clinical services on the day of action.

“Any patient who is or believes themselves to be in need of urgent and emergency care from a doctor will be seen and treated appropriately.

“Doctors taking action may however defer work that is considered non urgent or non-emergency to another day.

“If patients are in any doubt they should ring their practice. Practice staff will be in work on the day.”
