FIREARMS officers will appear in court to face charges over the death of a Burnley PC shot dead during a police training exercise.

PC Ian Terry (32) of Burnley, was shot and killed during a training exercise involving firearms at a disused warehouse in Newton Heath, Manchester on June 9th, 2008.

Two firearms officers and Greater Manchester Police will appear before Trafford Magistrates’ Court on September 4th to answer charges.

It comes after a Health and Safety Executive (HSE) investigation concluded there was sufficient evidence and a public interest to prosecute the force and two trainers for alleged criminal offences under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 (HSWA).

A court order is in place preventing the two officers from being named.

But the unnamed Exercising Conducting Officer, who was responsible for running the course on June 9th, will face charges for an alleged breach of Section 7 of the HSWA.

One of the Exercise Safety Officers, who assisted running the course, will also face charges for an alleged breach of the same section of the act.

A summons have been served on Greater Manchester Police – for an alleged breach of Section 2 of the HSWA.
