Elderly woman fights off would-be mugger
AN elderly woman managed to beat off a would-be mugger with her walking stick.
The frightening incident happened on Tuesday in broad daylight when the 79-year-old woman was walking along Turf Street, off Yorkshire Street, and a man attempted to grab her handbag.
The “scruffy white man” aged between 18 and 23 grabbed the woman’s coat but ran off when she hit him with her walking stick.
Police said the woman was upset but unhurt by the incident which happened at 12-40pm. Her assailant was described as having a gaunt face, around 5ft.4in. tall with scruffy brown hair.
