Crackdown on dog foulers in Burnley

BURNLEY Council has stepped in to tackle dog fouling nuisance after complaints from residents and councillors.

The council launched a crackdown after it became apparent a grassed area off Blannel Street in the Accrington Road area was attracting the anti-social behaviour. While most owners cleared up after their pets, there was a small minority who weren’t and who were causing a problem for local people.

Council officers mounted regular patrols of the area over a week and issued four £75 fixed penalty notices to owners who allowed their dogs to foul but didn’t clear up afterwards. All four people lived nearby.

Councillor Shah Hussain, the council’s executive member for community services, said: “There’s no excuse for dog owners not to clear up after their pets. The fact that this happened just weeks after a new dog bin was installed on the area to make it easier for dog owners to clear up any mess makes it even worse.

“Residents living in this area quite rightly wanted something done about the problem and the council has answered their calls. They can help us tackle this problem by calling the council’s streetscene unit on 01282 425011 if they spot someone not clearing up after their dog.

“I’d like to thank the majority of dog owners who do clear up after their pets and I hope the new dog bin helps them in that.”

Council officers will continue to carry out patrols of the area over the coming months.
