Council office to be “mothballed”

A TOWN centre Burnley Borough Council office is set to be “mothballed” in a bid to save money.

The council’s Executive Committee is recommended to approve the closure of its Nicholas Street offices while moves to sell the building go ahead.

A report to the Executive, which meets next Tuesday, said the move would save £72,000 a year.

The council has carried out a review of all its office space and found spare capacity in other buildings. The main changes will see Streetscene staff move to the Contact Centre in nearby Parker Lane and property consultancy move to the town hall.

Coun. Mark Townsend, the Executive member for Resources, said: “Given current levels of staffing it’s apparent that we can consolidate the council’s four largest buildings into three, bringing some major savings.

“It makes sense to make sure we make the best use of our office space and reducing the number of buildings we have to pay running costs on will mean a more cost-effective approach.”

The Nicholas Street building has been on the market since April but, as yet, there has been no firm interest. The council will continue to try and find a buyer.
