Council finances scrutinised

THE town’s finances will come under the microscope at a Burnley Council meeting next week.

Councillors will be updated on the council’s financial position when they consider several reports covering the authority’s spending and cash reserves in the three months up to the end of November last year.

The Executive, which meets on Tuesday, will consider reports on the revenue budget and the capital programme, featuring an update on an ambitious multi year programme to provide infrastructure and inward investment to the borough.

“In these difficult times it’s even more important that we keep a very close eye on our finances and make sure we effectively manage our budgets,” said Coun. Mark Townsend, Executive member for resources and performance management.

“At the moment we are forecasting revenue spending will be around half a million pounds lower than we budgeted for. The underspends are due to our drive to reduce costs whilst at the same time maintaining the standard of services. It’s vital we do this as the Government has announced plans to reduce our spending power for local services by up to 17.8% next year.”
