Clarets’ hero of Naples dies

THE hero of the Clarets’ famous European Fairs Cup clash against Napoli, goalkeeper Harry Thomson, has died.

The popular goalie was described as “a god in a green jersey” by the Italian press following his exploits in the match, which included saving a penalty and making a string of fine saves.

Harry died this week aged 72 from cancer.

Born in Scotland, Harry signed for Burnley Football Club in 1959 as understudy to famous keeper Adam Blacklaw, and eventually became the undisputed number one in 1967 when Blacklaw was sold to Blackburn Rovers. He made 117 appearances for the Clarets.

Thomson himself was sold to Blackpool in 1969 before ending his career at Barrow. He later played local league football for Barrow Supporters’ Club and retired in the town.

He went on to look after local football pitches on which his grandchildren played.

His son Scott Thomson said: “My mother and the rest of my family would like to thank everyone that’s kept in touch with my dad over the years.”
