THE social impact of Christian and Muslim places of worship in Burnley will be the focus for a new heritage project.

Building Bridges in Burnley has been awarded £49,800 by the Heritage Lottery Fund to explore the heritage of eight such holy places in Burnley.

The project will provide two part-time positions and several volunteering opportunities for young people and adults.

It will explore the social and artistic impact of eight Christian and Muslim places of worship through archival research and the recording of oral histories through interviews with people close to the faith buildings.

The history of each building will then direct participants in creating a photographic record, which in turn will be the inspiration for a series of art workshops.

Canon Peter Hapgood-Strickland, chairman of Building Bridges in Burnley, said: “We are very grateful to the Heritage Lottery Fund for its support and look forward to engaging as many people as possible with this exciting new project.”

The inter-faith group will utilise social media inlcuding a blog to help involve as many people as possible in the project.

It will run until December 2014 and will finish with a travelling exhibition and a hardback book chronicling the journey and learning of the project.
