Celebrating the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in Burnley and Padiham!

BURNLEY was painted red, white and blue at the weekend as people of all ages marked the Queen’s historic Diamond Jubilee with a wealth of celebrations.
Despite some typically British weather, churches, schools, community groups and neighbourhoods hung out the bunting and flew the flags to salute the monarch’s 60-year reign.
Street parties took place all over the borough throughout the weekend while schools celebrated the last week of the half-term with Jubilee buffet lunches, fancy dress, tree plantings and even re-enactments of the Queen’s Coronation.
In Cliviger on Saturday residents marked the occasion with a village fete on Mount Lane playing field which was followed in the evening with a Jacob’s join and ceilidh where more than 100 villagers enjoyed the entertainment. Sky News cameras followed the action all through the day
In Padiham around 300 people turned out to a street party in Albert Street, which raised more than £1,500 for Pendleside Hospice.
Organiser Daniel Hooper said: “It went really well, we’re only a little street but there were lots of people there. We had a band on, a big Jacob’s join and a DJ.”
Wet weather on Sunday halted some of the festivities. Ightenhill Festival was postponed by 24 hours after heavy rain left Ightenhill Park waterlogged.
Residents in Loughrigg Close, Burnley, also moved their Jubilee street party from Sunday to Monday because of the rain and the annual Padiham Duck Race had to be cancelled due to health and safety concerns. It will be rescheduled to take place in the coming weeks.
A community picnic on Queen Street recreation ground, Briercliffe, also had to be abandoned.
But residents in Kingsley Avenue, Padiham, did not let the weather spoil their fun. Between 40 and 50 people celebrated the Jubilee under the cover of gazebos and played games despite the rain on Sunday.
Residents in Brunshaw also went ahead with their event, with the celebrations taking place under cover of a marquee. and Brierfield’s Jubilee day continued as planned.
Monday’s weather was much better for a Big Lunch in Towneley Park, Sabden Live music festival, and Jubilee Gala in Read and Simonstone.
