Burnley body builder through to Mr Universe

A YOUNG Burnley muscle man who has taken the UK body building world by storm will jet to Greece on Friday to compete in the world championships.

Bodybuilder Liam Barrowclough (21), of Clifton Street, will travel to Athens where he will compete against athletes from across the globe.

He qualified by winning in the NAC UK Body Building Championships in Middleton last weekend.

Liam said: "I'm really excited, I've never been to Greece before and I have never competed abroad. I am quite confident but I don't know what the competition will be like."

The accolade comes after Liam was placed third in the Mr Britain contest, which means he automatically qualifies for the Mr Universe event in Southport in October.

And, coincidently, his training partner Mick Towneley, with whom he lifts weights of up to 500lb., took fifth place in the UK Strongest Man competition in Newcastle on the same day as the Mr Britain event.

Owner of Central Gym in Railway Street, where both men train Mr John Parker said: "For Liam's Mr Britain competition they had to compare physiques on stage.

"He is absolutely over the moon. I think he is the first lad in Burnley to get to Mr Universe and he has done really well because he is only 21.

"Mick was placed fifth in the whole of the UK. I spent most of the day on the phone telling them how each other was doing. It has been 12 months of hard work and it just shows it has all been worth while."

Liam has been offered sponsorship which will pay for competition clothing and advice from a dietician.
