Burnley would be broken up in boundary proposals

editorial image

THE shape of Burnley as we know it as a parliamentary constituency would change under dramatic and controversial proposals issued by the Boundary Commission.

In one of the widest-reaching shake-ups of the parliamentary map in Great Britain, the plan would see Briercliffe, Cliviger and Worsthorne merged with Pendle and largea reas of Accrington merged with Burnley.

The Boundary Commission for England has been engaged by the Government to review the make-up of electoral boundaries with the aim of reducing the number of MPs from 650 to 600.

Under the latest proposals issued this week Huncoat, Baxenden and the Barnfield, Milnshaw, Peel and Spring Hill areas of east Accrington would come to Burnley creating an electorate of 78,413.

Meanwhile, Briercliffe, Reedley, Cliviger and Worsthorne would elect a Pendle MP in an electorate of 75,713.
