A TRIO of bright Burnley students have been accepted onto courses at Oxford and Cambridge Universities.

Thomas Whitham Sixth Form students Sarah Thorne, Rosie Durkin and Muthassir Hussain have received offers from the prestigious universities to start their degrees in September.

Sarah (17), of Manchester Road, Burnley, has been offered a place to read natural sciences at Girton College, Cambridge.

The former Blessed Trinity RC College pupil was featured in the Burnley Express in September, 2011, when she scored an impressive 100% on her maths GCSE paper.

Former Hameldon Community College student Rosie (17) has been offered a place at Magdalen College, Oxford, to read English. She is following in her brother Sean’s footsteps who is studying physics at Christ Church, Oxford.

Muthassir, who has been given an open offer from Oxford University, will read engineering sciences. The 18-year-old former Sir John Thursby pupil is from Stoneyholme.

Thomas Whitham Sixth Form headteacher Mr Stuart Smith praised their fantastic achievement.

He said: “All three of these young people started their first year at secondary school at the beginning of Burnley’s Building Schools for the Future programme.

“There was a a great upheaval for all children and teachers at that time, with much learning on split sites, yet these three have performed marvellously and shown what can be achieved.”

Sarah and Rosie also completed an AQA extended project qualification introduced at Thomas Whitham which is similar to a university dissertation.

Mr Smith added: “We had 27 Year 13 students who completed this qualification, of which 13 gained an A* or A grade. The project is a very challenging piece of work and there were some very thoughtful individual studies made by our young people. It is a tremendous achievement.”
