St Peter's Primary School pupils and staff celebrate the schools Ofsted report.

PUPILS and staff from a Burnley primary school are celebrating after it was praised by inspectors.

St Peter’s Primary School, in Church Street, has improved from a satisfactory rating to good following its latest inspection by Ofsted.

The report highlighted that pupils are proud of their school, calling it “a big happy family.” Achievement was said to be good and the quality of teaching was also praised. Inspectors said pupils’ behaviour was good with some excellent examples in some lessons. Children were said to feel safe and secure at school.

Good quality provision in the Early Years Foundation Stage to ensure pupils get off to a good start and the report said: “Strong, dedicated leadership, skilfully supported by staff and governors, is firmly focused on improvement. Together, they have successfully raised attainment, improved the quality of teaching, increased the level of attendance and boosted the skills of leaders.”

But inspectors said pupils make good but not outstanding progress and not enough reach the higher standards in reading or maths. They also said children are not always given the right levels of work to get the best from them or enough chance to become independent and take more responsibility for learning on their own.

Headteacher Mrs Catherine Greenwood said she was delighted with the report: “I’m extremely proud of all the children and the staff. It’s all due to teamwork among staff at all levels.

“I was appointed headteacher in January 2011 and three weeks into my appointment we had an inspection by Ofsted and were graded satisfactory. Two years later, due to the hard work of everybody, we have achieved our good grade.”
