Burnley mum’s London Olympics 2012 job

YOUNG mum Carrie Radcliffe is used to telling footballers what to do.

She loves coaching youngsters, but for the next three weeks she will be swopping the playing fields of Burnley for football teams bidding for Olympic glory.

Carrie (24) is one of a handful of hopefuls selected as an official Olympic volunteer. Her job will be to escort players from around the world as they make their way to the stadium at Old Trafford and to their hotel accommodation.

Games organisers picked her out at an interview 18 months ago when they fell for her bubbly personality.

“I’m really excited”, said Carrie, “It’s at Old Trafford, but I am not a United fan, I’m a Burnley fan.”

She was looking forward to supporting the GB team in one of the first matches of the Games on Thursday.

“It is going to be quite busy,” said Carrie. “So I don’t think I will have much time to watch much of the other Olympics.”

Three-year-old Alfie and big brother Lewis (four) are a little too young to know the part Carrie will play in the Olympics when she dons her red and purple uniform, and will be happily playing their own games while mum is on duty.

Carrie developed her football coaching skills with the help of Burnley’s Sports and Play Development Officer Waheed Rashid, who has also encouraged her to take qualifications in basketball and cricket coaching, and mentor young girls trying to build their confidence as part of a Personal Best scheme. A bonus for Carrie is that childcare is provided as part of the scheme.

Said Rashid: “We’re so proud of what Carrie has achieved since she started getting involved with our team, her confidence has grown and she has become a valuable and inspirational mentor, both in what she’s achieved with us, and looking after two little boys on her own.”
