Burnley man told police drug use was ‘part of religion’

A BURNLEY man caught growing cannabis told police he used the drug as part of his religion.

Luigino Ronaldo Waine (43), of Todmorden Road, admitted producing 72 cannabis plants. He was sent on bail to Preston Crown Court to be sentenced, following an appearance before Blackburn magistrates.

Mr John Wood (prosecuting) said police attended an address in Francis Street, Blackburn, following a report of a disturbance.

The officers could smell cannabis and when they went upstairs found a locked bedroom door behind which was a cannabis production unit.

“Waine told police he cultivated cannabis for his own use and this was partly because of his religious inclinations,” said Mr Wood.

He said Waine had a conviction in 2006 for importing controlled drugs for which he was sentenced to nine years in prison.
