A SLEEPING man awoke to find a blaze had broken out in the bedroom of his Burnley home last night.

The man, in his 50s, is believed to have been asleep when the fire started at his house in Bracewell Street.

Fire crews say there were no smoke alarms in the property but luckily a noise awoke the man as smoke filled his home at around 8pm.

He tried to fight the flames with a pan of water before he was forced to flee the property and raised the alarm with neighbours.

Three fire engines were called out and entered the property with breathing apparatus to fight the fire which had taken hold of an upstairs bedroom.

A spokesman for Lancashire Fire and Rescue said: “The man was very lucky to escape unhurt due to the fact he did not have a smoke alarm.

“There has been some kind of noise form the fire that has woken him up. He tried to fight the fire with a pan of water.

“We would advise that when you discover a fire you should get out of there and call the fire brigade.”

The man suffered smoke inhalation and was taken to hospital for a precautionary check up.

The bedroom was severely damaged by fire and the upstairs of the property was left badly damaged by smoke.

Fire crews say the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
