Burnley man arrested after gas blast alert
A MAN sparked a gas blast alert after allegedly threatening to blow up his Burnley home.
The 25-year-old is believed to have told police he intended to kill himself after severing a gas pipe at the Westgate flat last night.
Officers could smell gas prompting police to evacuate people from neighbouring properties over explosion fears.
Police were forced to shut off parts of Westgate Road and a cordon was set up around the address at 9-45pm.
Concerns had grown for the man during the two-hour stand-off and two further people were believed to be trapped in an upstairs flat.
A spokesman for Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service said: “The man had called the police to say he was suicidal and that he had fractured a gas pipe.
“The whole property was full of gas.”
Police negotiators managed to talk the man into coming out of the building at around 11-25pm.
A Lancashire Police spokesman confirmed that a man had been detained.
He said: “A 25-year-old Burnley man was arrested on suspicion of causing public nuisance and threatening to damage or destroy property.”
