TWO youths were arrested by police after a former Burnley school building was torched last night.

Firefighters were called to the Habergham High School site, in Kiddrow Lane, around 7pm. When they arrived they found two fires which had been started in the stage area.

Crews wearing breathing apparatus were sent into the school and a hose reel was used to put out the flames.

Watch manager Steve Harrison, from Burnley fire station, said: “It was stupid because when we went into the building we struggled to find the seats of fire and we do this for a living.

“It’s like a rabbit warren in there and it would have been difficult for them to find their way out again.

“I’ve been to quite a few incidents where people have started fires and then had to be rescued because they couldn’t find their way out.

“We then had to check the rest of the building which takes two fire engines away from Burnley, we had to get Nelson to provide cover.”
