Libraries could close if we don’t use them

As a regular user of Colne Library, I was sorry to see the letter from Mrs Phildes.

Library use is declining and if you want to encourage children to use the library and read books telling them to tip-toe round and sit in silence is not the way to do it. The Mother and Toddler Club is not all day every day.

The role of public libraries has changed. When they were established there was a substantial proportion of the population who had no access to books other than the library. The local libraries perform a valuable service and not just of providing books.

If Mrs Phildes and her friends choose not to visit the library because they see it as having dumbed down, the ultimate effect will be that libraries close and I’m sure they would not consider that as being a worthwhile objective.
