BURNLEY women and girls are being urged to grab their last chance to enter Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life.

The fund-raising 5km event will take place on Sunday, May 20th, in Towneley Park and there are just two weeks before registration closes.

More than 800 women have already signed up but organisers hope to encourage 1,000 to walk, run or jog the course.

Entry closes on Thursday, May 17th, and is available by visiting www.raceforlife.org.

Race for Life is non-competitive and most women will be able to walk the course in an hour.

Maria Montgomery, event manager for Race for Life in the North-West, said: “We are absolutely thrilled that so many women have entered Race for Life in Burnley. Together, they will help us create a fantastic atmosphere on the day and raise crucial funds to help beat cancer.

“But we don’t want anyone to miss out. We still have places left for the Burnley event but we are reminding women who want to take part at this venue that they must enter as soon as possible, before registration closes.

“Please enter Race for Life in Burnley today. The battle against cancer never stops so we need you to sign up now and start raising money for ground-breaking research to help save more lives.”

In 2011, 1,424 women took part in Race for Life in Burnley and helped raise £64,000 and this year the target is £87,000.

Maria added: “Women of all ages, abilities, shapes and sizes take part in Race for Life. They motivate and inspire each other to complete the course. Many simply walk round, chatting and having fun but they all share the wonderful atmosphere.”

Women can boost their charity contribution by doing a “wardrobe work-out” before the event. Cancer Research UK is encouraging them to sort out and bag up quality clothes, books and accessories they no longer use and take them to the Donation Station at Race for Life. Each bag of goods could help raise as much as an extra £30.

Every participant receives a donation bag, along with a Gift Aid form, as part of their Race for Life entry pack. Just by completing the form and popping it in their bag, women can boost the value of their donation by an extra 25%. There will be a park and ride scheme in operation running from Turf Moor Football Ground. Participants are encouraged to use this and to car share where possible.
