Burnley Ladies were beaten 2-0 on their visit to Crewe Alexandra.
But if they continue to show the same level of commitment and industry, they will surely retain their place in the North West Women’s Premier League.
For long periods of the game the lady Clarets matched their title-chasing opponents, with Debbie Trayner going close witha thunderous drive and a low shot following a throughball fromEm Forrest.
In between these Burnley’ chances, Crewe were repelled by a combination of alert keeping from Kirsty Reader and tenacious tackling by the backline, where skipper Jo Holt was dominant.
Ten minutes before the break a rare defensive lapse allowed the Crewe centre-forward to race through and shoot under the keeper.
Burnley immediately pressed for an equaliser, Forrest’s free kick being fumbled by the Crewe stopper, who redeemed herself with a brave block as Holt followed up.
From the resulting corner, the ball ricocheted to Rohman but her instinctive strike spun wide of the post.
Crewe doubled their lead at the start of the second half, but Burnley continued to compete for the remainder of the game.
A narrow defeat against one of the strongest sides in the Premier League augurs well for the lady Clarets, who, today travel to the City of Manchester.
